Title: National marine baseline survey 1995 : littoral cell 2 : Flamborough Head to the Wash

Abstract:
This littoral cell extends from Flamborough Head in the North to the Wash in the South. Its predominant characteristics are the heavily industrialised Humber Estuary and the Wash embayment which in the past has shown a propensity for eutrophication. Laboratory analysis of water samples and underway continuous monitoring both showed the region directly to the South of the Humber and the Wash to have elevated nutrients and Chlorophyll-a concentrations. Dissolved metals concentrations were not abnormally high with respect to environmental Quality Standard (EQS) levels but high concentrations were clustered to the South of the Humber Estuary. Trace organic concentrations were low other than y-HCH, which still did not exceed the EQS level. The remotely sensed imagery and underway data showed the major oceanographic features within the region. Imagery of Flamborough Head showed the presence of an eddy having higher suspended solids concentration.
