Abstract:
The effectiveness and performance of "passive" beach control structures such as groynes, offshore breakwaters, revetments and seawalls is well documented and understood. By contrast 'active beach control techniques involving mechanical or hydraulic manipulation of
beach material, are relatively new, untested and poorly understood. This report reviews existing knowledge on active beach management methods, including beach and nearshore seabed nourishment, alongshore recycling, cross-shore reprofiling, sediment bypassing and beach stabilisation by drainage of the water table. The effectiveness and suitability for different coastal conditions of these methods is assessed, and where present behaviour is poorly understood, the need for further studies is determined.
