Abstract:
This report predicts future growth in the demand for water for agricultural irrigation in England and Wales, and advises as to how the National Rivers Authority (NRA) should respond. The predictions exclude the possible effects of climate change. The report describes the benefits of irrigation to the nation and to the consumer, and concludes that it is in the national interest to meet future irrigation demands where possible, but subject to adequate protection of the environment and any costs incurred being charged to the beneficiaries. Recommendations for NRA responses are given.
