Abstract:
This report proposes a classification scheme for the sediment component of the schemes for estuarine and coastal waters based on existing levels of List I and List D metals (Hg, Cd, Cu, Pb, Cr, Zn, Ni, As) in UK estuarine and coastal sediments. The scheme is designed to reflect the extent of contamination from natural and anthropogenic sources and is not intended to relate directly to any biological effects which may result. However, the relative toxicity of List I and List II metals is considered when deriving the overall classification.
