Abstract:
The sea off the beach at Porthallow has failed the bacterial criteria for compliance with the E.C. Directive concerning the quality of Bathing Waters on several occasions during the period 1986 to 1989. The Tidal Waters Unit of the National Rivers Authority, South West Region investigated the area on 25 August 1989. An inspection of the beach and the streams converging in Porthallow was undertaken and bacteriological samples taken in an attempt to identify the cause of the failures. The investigation revealed the discharge of crude effluent from the village to the Porthallow stream resulting in high bacterial counts within the stream. The historical data and the observations from the investigation suggest that the non-compliance with the directive was most probably due to the discharge of contaminated freshwater to the sea.
