Title: The environmental impact of the foot and mouth disease outbreak: and interim assessment
Author: Environment Agency
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This report provides an assessment of the environmental impact of the foot and mouth outbreak in England and Wales up until October 2001. It is an interim report, which will be updated as more monitoring takes place and more information becomes available. The EA recognises that environmental impacts are only part of a wider range of impacts, including social and economic impacts. These have been addressed by others such as the Countryside Agency and need to be considered alongside this report. The report: provides an integrated assessment of how the outbreak and the activities associated with its management have affected the environment and puts these into perspective; demonstrates the role played by the Environment Agency in minimising these stresses and impacts; provides an overview to inform the many inquiries that have been announced and the wider debate on future agriculture policy.
