Abstract:
Woolacombe beach is situated in North Devon, and has a major importance to the region as a popular beach for both surfers and tourists. The beach is approximately 3.2 Km long and is sampled at two sites, Woolacombe (village) at the north end and Woolacombe (Putsborough) at the south end of the beach. At the north end of the beach there is a sewage outfall discharging treated effluent from Woolacombe STW. Swimming, surfing and diving also takes place in the vicinity o f the outfall which lies outside the specified area of the Designated Bathing Water. In 1995, Woolacombe (Putsborough) failed the EC Bathing Waters Directive and Woolacombe (village) passed this directive but did not achieve its European Blue flag award. This award takes into account the EC bathing waters guideline (G) levels which are set lower than the mandatory levels (imperative "I" values). A request was received from Devon Area Survey Officer to determine if the discharge from Woolacombe STW, comes onto Woolacombe beach in a tidal cycle during light north - westerly winds.
