Our Sites

FBA Windermere and The River Laboratory, Dorset

The Freshwater Biological Association has two sites, our head office on the shores of Lake Windermere in Cumbria, and the River Laboratory, adjacent to the River Frome in Dorset. Both sites possess unique freshwater facilities and laboratories and are supported by a dedicated team of staff.

The Windermere and River Laboratory sites both boast access to various lakes, rivers and streams in their respective local areas making them ideal bases for field work, courses and research work.

Our Windermere site is located on the western shore of the lake and covers an area of 2 hectares including 400m of lake shore. Specialist facilities include Laboratories, Conference Facilities, Library, Lake and Jetty access, Aquarium, Hatchery and private access to a variety of Cumbrian Field Sites.

The River Laboratory is located adjacent to the River Frome, a classic Southern Chalk Stream. With extensive Office and Laboratory facilities as well and Meeting Rooms, Conference Room and a Library the River Lab is ideally suited for meetings and conferences, field trips and research. Unique facilities include Experimental Channels, Global Warming Experimental Ponds, a Fish Counter and the Fluvarium, and access to 4km of the main river Frome and several nearby rivers.
