Abstract:
This is the second annual review of Nene LEAP. This document divides the catchment issues in Actions that had been addressed. For this actions it provides partners involved, the starting and finishing dates, lifecycle and progress before this year. The issues considered in this annual review are: demands for water during periods of low flow threaten the ecological needs of dependent river and wetland systems; knowledge on the environmental impact of abstraction for public water supply on the Nene, Nene Washes and Nene estuary during drought periods; water available in summer to meet the needs of any future growth in demand for spray irrigation from the area of the North Level IDB that is fed from the Nene via the slacker at the Dog-in-a-Doublet; significant reduction in the area of and species associated with river and wetland habitats; introduction of invasive alien plant and animal species threatens the ecological diversity of our natural environment; upstream and downstream free passage of fish is restricted on the Nene; an apparent decline in the grayling population on the River Ise, insufficient data to allow the effective management of the River Nne ell fishery; condition of the fishery of the tidal Nene is unknown; the condition of the river control structures on the Nene threatens the integrity of the Nene navigation; amenity services for navigation users; members of the public place themselves in danger by swimming in the catchment's watercourses; routine biological and chemical monitoring indicates poor water quality at a number of sites/stretches in the Plan area; nutrient enrichment of watercourses in the Plan area impacts of water quality and affects flora and fauna and other uses of water; chemical monitoring has revealed failures against the EC Dangerous Substances Directive at two sites within the Nene catchment; salinity in the South Holland Main Drain adversely affects fisheries; enhance recreation; water quality is being impacted upon by oestrogenic compounds; biological deterioration in smaller streams and brooks; conservation value of the Northampton Wahland is threatened by unregulated recreational use; flood defence; flood risk; flood warning; siltation along the tidal length; gas migration; illegal disposal of waste; SACs, SPAs and Ramsar sites.
