Title: Exercise Erebus
Author: National Rivers Authority Anglian Region
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
Exercise Erebus took place on Monday 7th September 1992 commencing at 0700hrs with a Road Traffic accident, involving a bulk chemical tanker carrying Hydrochloric Acid. This had been programmed into the exercise as a false alarm. The main part of the exercise simulated multiple fish mortalities across the Region, caused by a goods train departing Parkeston Quay, Harwich on Sunday night, travelling across the region and departing at Newark on Trent. En route a number of Chemical Drums containing Endosulphan (UN2995) were lost overboard. In addition a Bulk container split, leaking the same chemical onto the railway line and into various watercourses which resulted in the fish mortalities.
