Title: The development of biomanipulation techniques and control of phosphorus release from sediments (475/1/A) : LIFE project : restoration of the Norfolk Broads
Author: G. Phillips
Document Type: Monograph
Abstract:
This is a progress report provides an overview of the EC LIFE project to aid restoration of the Norfolk Broads. The Broads Authority together with the National Rivers Authority have been carrying out a programme of research with the aim of restoring the shallow eutrophic lakes that form the Broads. The overall aim is to control phytoplankton growth, creating clear water conditions that will allow submerged aquatic vegetation to grow in the lakes, providing habitat for a diverse fish, birds and invertebrate fauna. Initially work concentrated on reducing the input of phosphorous from sewage treatment and industrial discharges, but it has now become clear that restoration requires additional steps to be successful. This overview provides a summary of the work its context and future direction.
